None of this makes any sense. I still don’t understand why even with people bypassing there aren’t enough people to upgrade. Also, if it’s true that FOs are sitting around then time to send out the furlough notices but they aren’t doing that so something is up.

Because BY LAW you are required to have 1000 hours of 121 SIC (or qualifying 135) time to be eligible for upgrade. Those they have with 1000+ hours don’t want to upgrade (or are already holding a CJO from some major). Those who want to upgrade don’t have the hours and can’t get them because the more senior FOs who don’t want to upgrade are getting the SIC hours available from the declining numbers of CAs.

Also, if it’s true that FOs are sitting around then time to send out the furlough notices but they aren’t doing that so something is up.

They need to have new people who at least MIGHT upgrade, just as badly as they need to get rid of the senior FOs who won’t upgrade. OO is doing this with mandatory upgrades. Republic is trying to do this by capping FO pay at year four levels. But for the interim, they are just deferring new hire classes - some as far as into October.

They are! And they’re pushing back all FO new hire classes to solely focus on the few DECs that they can persuade to show up!

Again, the simple reality is, it’s not easy to get on with an airline as a 1500hr CFI right now.

And you have to ask why anyone who is qualified would not be able to get into a major. #trainingfailure / #personalityproblem

I do have CJO's from several regionals, but the dates are decently far out. Couple that with bases I don't love, 90 days of training, and little flying on reserve, it will be almost a year until I'm actually flying with some regularity. So even to wait for my ATP and then jump would cost me months.
Boo. Friggity. Hoo. Imagine having to endure months of less than optimal life at a regional airline…

I'm currently an MEI yes, no airline experience. I do have a lot of experience with intense certification programs from a past in finance, and while that's definitely not a 1:1 (obviously I wasn't flying, but from a quantity of information standpoint), I think I'm pretty successful in "drinking from the firehose" situations.

I'm not saying I think I'm ready for an Airbus, but at the same time if they are willing to hire me sooner, it seems worth investigating. I'm not trying to skip the regionals per se, and I understand most people need the regionals to transition you to jets, then you jump with your ATP to an ULCC (now)...but again the timeline is so far out and I'm already past ATP mins, so just exploring all options at this point.
Ho. Ly. Sheet.

Intense certification program experience? Well why didn’t you say that in the first place! This is definitely the ace I want with me running low viz ops out of ATL or LGA on a busy holiday weekend in a 319 pasted with DMI stickers. I just hope there’s enough down time to hear about your series 7 exams and Vmc demos.

I knew that one wouldn't go over well...clearly there are people coming from CFI'ing and making it through, though I only know of them coming from "approved programs" at this point.

I don't think I'm special or better than anyone, but it sounds like this is already happening and those people are surviving. Ideal? For sure it's not. But if it's an option, why wouldn't I investigate it?

Absolutely. Highly motivated people will make it through. Those wanting to back into a job can wait six months until their regional class comes through. It’s an individual choice. You’ve been told the risks and only you know how motivated you are.
