Default Spirit taking on debt… to pay off debt

Going into hock for $600 million at 8% interest to pay off a previous debt at ~5%. Brilliant!

If the previous debt was bonds with a maturity date and you don’t have the spare cash to pay off that debt on that maturity date, what else are you going to do? Not ideal, but necessary.

Of course, if about $200 million of that went into pilot pay, for 3200 pilots, that would be about $62,000 each. That might get retention up to where the existing aircraft and future aircraft deliveries could be fully utilized. That might bring in a lot more revenue than just parking aircraft.

Instead of paying debt due in 2023, going into their free cash, kick it to JBlu to deal with down the road. Doesnt sound too stupid to me.

Stupid or not, Im sure they have a reason for borrowing, and it's probably not from a position of strength that led them there.

Halon and I are flying to LGA together next week. After we have the customary fist fight to determine who sits in the left seat, we're gonna hash out a TA for the pilot group and should have something good for Bendo to approve shortly thereafter.

My only demand is that I won't take the fat chick at the bar on the layover

Ding ding ding. Winner. It’s clear this management team is unhappy with the merger with JB so this is par for the course.

I've heard this is to finance the massive pilot raises coming on this new extension. This will make Spirit the highest 320 operator in the industry and fix attrition, further increasing utilization and increase revenues over the next 2yrs making it easy to pay off this debt and be profitable.... dont kill the messenger! hahaha
