As a non-rev - you can go directly to the back, just like revenue passengers, and if in plainclothes avail of alcohol beverages - you may even not have to pay for them if they know you are non-revving

In fact, if you are lucky enough to be in Int'l 1st class - the real 3-cabin kind - You will be treated the same as everyone else. I was one of 7 non-revs in 1st NYC-LON, and only one revenue passenger -how would he have felt if he knew that he was the only one to pay $ thousands for his seat while EVERYONE else was on there for free?

If non-reving, there is no requirement to speak to the Captain. Have a beer before the flight? No problem.

If you gain access to the seat by virtue of of Cass approval (ie-Jumpseat), but the agent gives you an empty seat in back, you are still a jumpseater, and subject to all of those rules. ( no drinking ahead of time or while in back, even if out of uniform. Must have medical and pilot certificate on your person) That’s why you check in with the Captain. And you should have your licence and medical out ready to present it because, as stated earlier, it’s required when jumpseating, regardless of where you actually end up sitting.

The confusion for some newer pilots and gate agents stems from the unlimited Jumpseat policy that most airlines implemented in the recent past. When it was limited to the number of jumpseats on the jet, it was easy. But, now that agents process Jumpseaters in the back with such regularity, it becomes like non reving, practically speaking. But, always know that a Cass approval to get that seat in back means you’re technically riding with the Captain’s permission, and an Observer Member of the Crew(OMC).

Yeah I understand all of that, my question was directed more to the question of why the gate agents seem to default to the CASS form.

They default to the form because they don’t want to get fired for a delay. So they error on the side of fill this out. Because when captain happy recognizes a non rev with his family and demands the form 3 minutes before push....

Cant speak to their reasoning there, sorry. Maybe a lurking gate agent can chime in?

I understand their viewpoint. Might as well cover all bases just in case. But it adds a lot of confusion when you’re non-reving (listed as a nonrev) but have this jumpseat form that requires you check in with the captain as a jumpseater. I usually explain the situation and our commuters usually understand immediately but the guys who don’t commute look at me like I’m speaking a different language.

No you are correct and United allows it under certain circumstances, as one example.

And LOL that people in this forum don’t understand the difference between Non rev, jumpseater, and deadheading.

LOL, so true. But to circle back to the start of the thread... now that we’ve fleshed out the fact that a Cass approval for a seat in the back is technically a jumpseater, do we now understand how it is unsat and unprofessional to breeze by the cockpit door while stating(not asking!) “I’m in the back”?
