Jumpseat Etiquette
#41
Technically if they’re a spirit employee and have a seat in the back they could have just non-revved and wouldn’t have to talk to you so unless the guy was blatantly rude to you, I don’t really see what the big deal is. Maybe you just want to chat or need your ego massaged but I think most are a lot more relaxed on their own airplanes compared to some other airline where they are asking for a ride. Some guys make this job much harder than it needs to be.
Different ball game for offline jumpers of course (and that includes affiliated regionals, and WO's).

In that 10 minute "jumpseat protocol rundown" that every airline should have, they should also make sure to mention to captains that not everyone boarding the aircraft in a uniform is a jumpseater. I've had more than one captain in the past make themselves sound a bit silly when they press me about proper jumpseat protocol when I was not actually a jumpseater, but a non rev.
Most regional new-hires don't know, and the majors hire mil and corporate guys who also don't know.

Company policy and etiquette may differ of course.
With that said, if you drink and then they need you up front for an emergency that could be a grey area. When I was a regional noob, I checked in with the CA on a US flight. He asked me if I had a presentable civilian shirt, which I did, so he asked me to put it on, which I did. After the cabin door was closed, he told the FA to put me in the empty seat in 1C and drinks on the house. What could I do?

thats what I’m trying to say. Even though I’m a pilot I can still just list as a non-rev...my medical certificate is irrelevant.

If anyone asks for an ID I just show them my belt buckle, which works like a charm about 60% of the time. The other 40% I usually just rent a car with my company discount code and drive there, or if I'm wearing my lucky batman underwear sometimes Sully shows up disguised as an airport janitor and gives me the blessing of the jumpseat gods.

Had this discussion with the FAA once... if you're not in the actual, as far as they're concerned you're a pax in the back. The FAA doesn't care how much you paid for the ticket, or by what arrangement you got a free ticket. They also don't care if you did JS paperwork, if you're not up front it doesn't count.

The company once tried to force a pilot into the HIMS program because they thought he was drinking while riding in the back as a jumpseater instead as a non-revver.
It took two months but they finally admitted that the reservation system screwed up, the pilot was in fact non-revving and not listed as a jumpseater, and they dropped the investigation. The guy next to him drinking the entire time? He had no issues, as his reservation was for a non-rev booking.
If you plan on drinking, list as a non-revver.

Was hitching a ride on WN, the airplane broke, returned to the gate. The idiot refused to get off the airplane and demanded the Captain tell him what was wrong with the airplane before he would go.
We were an RCH from losing WN privileges because of that moron.
Thankfully, he got canned. Last I heard he was back in Amsterdam.

So you’ve made it to Spirit! A pretty darn good accomplishment! Do we really need to teach you proper jumpseat etiquette?
Handing your CASS form to the CA and saying, “I’m in back” doesn’t cut it.
I get it, we work at the same company, but that doesn’t let you off the hook for being polite or respectful. Hopefully you’re not pulling this crap with other airlines. Losing jumpseat privileges would suck. We already had a certain Dutch fellow try to do that for us with SWA.
Sadly you ran off before we could go over properly asking for a “ride”.
