Should be. Could be.
A couple of crews got to spend the night in the TPA terminal last night. Apparently the Covid Home School workers just couldn't get around to the crews that timed out (or see it coming) and get some rest accomodations squared away. Over two hours on hold. 0600 they call to inform of the 1900 DH back to base followed with a sheepish, "are you still at the airport?". Where else would we be??? At least I am allowed to find my own way home all day long on my day off. No hotel offered.

or
2) Get own hotel and expense it
If they spent the night at the airport, that’s their own fault.

If there’s even a whiff of a melt down I’m buying hotels for myself and the FO and expensing it. Never had a problem getting reimbursed the few times I’ve done it. I’m too old and been doing this too long to be sleeping in airports.

Sometimes it’s hard to find a hotel during a meltdown. But my first step in Tampa would be the short walk to the attached Marriott. I find it so strange that someone making 200-300k would sleep in the airport like a teenager...

Especially when they knew the company would reimburse them.

Agreed. Last time I had to book my own room was in FLL and had to Uber to get to a hotel 40 minutes away. Company reimbursed everything. Don’t just limit your search to airport hotels with a shuttle as those are first to fill up. Also when trying to contact scheduling email is best.
As soon as they start saying things like “we’re not sure where you’re going right now” and “we are working through the list of affected crew members” I’m out.

I think the company’s stance on hotels is that if you’re not timed out they don’t have a responsibility to get you in a hotel. Nice huh?
This also goes to how we handle IROP hotels via hotel connections or whatever they call themselves. Many people don’t realize that when you press one on the phone tree you are not getting a spirit employee but an outsourced company that is extremely incompetent and has proven so many times over the years. They want to use hotels in their portfolio to save money instead of getting you something quick. Then all communication done between our crew scheduling and hotel connections and then the hotels is email or messengers while you sit on hold. It’s cumbersome and slow when someone could easily pick up a phone with a credit card number. No major airlines operate this way, only regionals.
