I’ve flown with a few of the FOs from the program and they’re sharp and make great FOs. The only times I’ve heard of FOs from the program not being popular is if they come out as an arrogant know it all. That usually doesn’t go over well. I think it’s a great program that leads to a good career.

because some of them jump in the plane on day 1 and start trying to instruct.

that’s the rumor, anyhow.

You’re taking a new FO who was a flight instructor previously and has spent the last 2 years teaching the airplane that they have never flown.
Any CA should realize this and understand there is going to be a learning curve for this FO as it pertains to CRM and flight deck dynamics.

I have found most of them are pretty good pilots and a pleasure to fly with. I'd take one of of those guys/gals over a bitter dude that is on his 7th airline (we have a lot of those people too).

Thank you for the great info! Any idea on competitive mins to get the position? And the website says after 24 months you’re qualified to move to an FO is there any writing at all that guarantees you can move up or how is the jump made?

That’s why they say qualify, not guarantee. They will never guarantee you an FO position as a ground instructor. What if someone comes in and does a bad job?

As a ground instructor hours aren’t really important, I’d assume it’s more about personality, knowledge, and ability to teach.

FWIW, my ground instructor told me how much he was getting paid. Idk if that included bonuses or extra work pay but it was definitely more than year 1 FO pay. Closer to year 2 pay.

Still need ATP mins to graduate to FO though. Some of the ground instructors now are in a situation where they are ready to graduate from the program and grab a pilot slot but they don't have ATP mins.
