Life at Spirit

See, I think that might be a factor that drives the nagging voice in the back of my head. I always knew regionals were temporary and stepping stones. I thought lots of people came to ULCC for a long time and maybe to even retire. Since I’ll have to commute to reserve, which sounds like it’s been lengthy lately and the rules really aren’t better than my own reserve rules, and it sounds like lots of people are updating apps (even the guys who’ve been there a while). I think that’s what is perturbing. I’d deal with the first year pay and commuting to reserve if it meant building seniority and tenure. But if everyone is contemplating leaving and longevity is in question, it makes me wonder as well.

Not in flight school, but some time between getting my regional class date, and finishing IOE, I had squarely set my sights on ULCC. Hoped and prayed I could build time quick and go right seay to right seat. Perusing forums for info daily, talking to guys in DTW when I commuted, and it sounded like there was a lot more positivity in 2019 and early 2020. I didn’t really update apps or read much on the forums during covid but I’ve been back the last few months and it feels like a totally different environment. Yes I know it’s the forums, and I know every airline forum has started to look like this. But F9 looks…idk what’s going on over there and morale here seems to have tanked to non-existent, with attrition and retention as bad as my regional.
after a year of eagerly applying and updating I finally got an MTC coming up. I’m looking forward to it, but I can’t help but feel some cold feet at the same time. My “good seniority” here doesn’t really mean much, but at least I’m based at home. Second year pay is good at spirit (compared to a regional) but I could upgrade now and get an immediate big raise, then probably get in range of second year spirit pay based on the 90+ hours a month they keep giving us. I’d have to commute either way, but my young captain friends are all bailing for majors like your pilots are too.
anyway I like spirit and for a long time considered it a destination. But some days, even filtering the doom and gloom, it’s a bit scary.

Either A.) we’ve had a glut of pilots leave, but those who wanted to leave left and those who want to stay stayed. We absorb this, hiring continues and upgrades resume.
Or B.) The trend continues or increases. Planes get parked, captains are downgraded, growth comes to a screeching halt. Basically all the worst parts of the Bible.

By summer we should know a lot more. Resignations have increased from the email in November through January, but it’s not really enough of a data set for a definitive conclusion.

True have a longer period to see the trend, but I think we will see that trend a lot sooner. After Jan 1 the legacies ramped up hiring, I hear 80 a week at some. At what point do we hit a wall with our ability to put new hires and upgrades through training? What if anything is the near term limit? Can we do 150+ upgrades and newhires a month, so we end up with 75? There is a net total of 26 new hires so far for the month.
