I’m currently an FO at a regional. I live in base and I enjoy it. Although I have only been with the company a year I’m the #15 FO in my base and have the seniority to upgrade. Unfortunately, although I have the seniority, I do not have the hours. Currently I am 23 years old and have 1574 TT and 620.9 121/Turbine time. I have a friend my age who started 6 months before me and just hit the 2000 TT and 1000 121/Turbine mins. He applied on a Friday and had received an email the next day on Saturday and a phone call on Monday. He chose to stay and is in our next upgrade class. With that being said, I should be about 426 hours away from hopefully receiving an offer for an interview. I am very interested in going to Spirit instead of upgrading because my wife and I are originally from Florida and she is already tired of the winter and misses the beach. So I would really like to get the FLL base so we can move back and I won’t have to commute.

My question to all of you currently at Spirit is if you were in my shoes would you stay at the regional, upgrade and commute or try your best to get hired with Spirit? Obviously my end goal is to end up at a Legacy but Inalso want to balance that with QOL. I have been reading the forums here and I understand there are a lot of unhappy people at Spirit and the company is playing hard ball in the negotiations. But in your opinion, would it still be a step up of from a regional? and would living in base as opposed to commuting make it worth it to you?

Thank you for your time and opinions.
Stay and get your 1,000 TPIC. Once you have it, you never have to worry about not being eligible for a job for not meeting all qualifications. Yes, Legacies are hiring without the TPIC, but your chances are much greater with it.

Market forces are always susceptible to quickly changing, it could become the hiring standard again (still is at some very coveted Airlines) and you won’t likely have the opportunity to get that quick Captain Upgrade again during your Aviation career.

Yeah, a regional seems like a more attractive choice for someone starting their airline career as you’ll prob make more money as an FO the first two years (bonuses), upgrade in two years, and have a flow or preferential interview at a legacy. Consequently, we’re competing with regionals for new hires. All of those things can change, but right now, I have no idea why anyone would want to work here, no offense if you think otherwise.

Absent any new orders past 2021 junior Capt. will be around 1400 on the list, there is almost 2000 now. Take the upgrade in 450 hours and get the 1000 TPIC..

They shoved PBS up our buts here at AA in the BK process. It has not been as terrible as I thought. For example: Being junior I did a lot of Manaus flying. All nighter coming home. Pretty horrible as a line of that was about 8 trips. With PBS I have drastically reduced the amount of all nighters I do in a month to about zero. There may be one or two that show up on a sched, but then I can usually trade them off..Quality of life on a narrow body generally sucks anyway, line bidding or not. Yes you lose training, end of month and vaca conflicts witch sucks, but depending on the software it does not have to be the end of the world. Not sure I would draw a line in the sand JUST for PBS. Especially if you get money, calendar day, keep your 4 days off etc..
