OAK Hotel/Crashpad
Hey guys. I will be based in OAK until March and looking for a place to stay. Are there any decent hotels near the airport that offer crew rates? Any suggestions for crashpads in the area? I've never really been to the area so unfamiliar with public transportation or how to get around. Thanks for any suggestions.

Days Inn, La Quinta, Red Lion are a few options. Expect to spend between $60-$90 ish on a room. Red Lion has a restaurant and bar and serves dinner which the La Quinta and Days Inn don't have. There is a place within walking distance of those but the streets can be scary! Rooms are not all that nice with bad fitness equipment and such. I was there for two months and just made by on hotels and didn't look at crashpads.

Here's what I did to ensure I didn't sit around much on reserve as a commuter:
- I set my reserve preference to FLY.
- I bid PM reserve so I would commute in the morning of and hung out at the lounge. By the start of my RAP, I'd usually have a trip on my board.
Out of 2 months commuting to reserve, I spent maybe 4 nights total in a hotel... YMMV.

Very few if any crashpads available due to the insane real estate market in the Bay Area. Red-eyes out of OAK/SFO and a good sized FedEx operation out of OAK can save you from a hotel at the end of the trip. OAK pilot lounge has a nice sleep room and a shower if you can't make it home until the next AM. SFO has a nice USO for former mil types. Feb tends to be a low flying reserve month due to less days to make money for the line holders. Try and find a bud in your new hire class to split a room with at the commuter hotels.

Has anyone actually moved out to the OAK area? If so what are some of the better areas to live? Also were you able to get a 6 month or less lease? I know that the commute for me will be brutal but will only last a few months, just considering making the move and looking for some insight

Chances are very good that you'd be in OAK for 2 months tops. 1st month is your hardline month and 2nd is reserve. Some classes have been able to avoid it all together. Just about everyone who wants out is gone by the 3rd month. If you really want to move out here and are looking for affordable, I'd look on the I-80 corridor between Fairfield and Sacramento. Sac is right on the 2-hour limit for reserve callout, depending on time of day, but I have rarely been called last minute (usually have a trip on my board the day prior to my AM rap)
Fairfield is :45-1:00 from OAK...not sure of prices there but it's got to be more affordable than anything in the Bay Area.
Where are you eventually hoping to be based?

Days Inn and Quality Inn area not safe. If you don't want to pay for Holiday Inn I suggest Red Lion. These places safer. As mentioned above you'll probably fly most reserve blocks if you choose to FLY. If you're rsv blocks touch weekends you will fly!

Scheduled for interview on 2/22. But in the spirit of being positive, thinking ahead a little. Does anyone utilize an RV for a place to stay when needing to stay in the area? I know some of the guys in the RV city at LAX, and wondered if anyone does it at OAK?

Unless you plan on being permanently based there, why bother? Vegas is close and a great commuter base. Oakland is full of guys who either live on the west coast and can drive or have an easy commute (commutable trips both ends) or transient guys who are hoping to leave there the next month.
Once you hold a line, there are a few hotel options that make it doable, although it is the worst commuter base in our system. Most commuters have given up on Oakland and bid into Vegas where they enjoy great seniority and a plethora of commuting options with rides and places to stay.
