Health benefits do start from day 1 of training. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and research all the available options, not just the plan that the benefits people push the most. PHX will probably be available within a few months at the most, not sure about immediately as there are small ups and downs in most domiciles that can be tough to predict.

Day 1 for medical and travel. Depending on your start date you might not be bidding for base until May for July. In that case you could theoretically get PHX right off. If you bid in April for June then you may be OAK for a month and then PHX.

Thank you very much for great info guys! Is there any way to find out more details about medical insurance options. My wife has a pre-existing condition and I wanna be sure I get the best choice on day 1 with no interruption in coverage. It's very important there's no gap during the transition, so I'm thinking about paying for Cobra till the end of April and get on a Southwest plan May 1st. Is this a good idea or am I off? Thanks!

I don't have the particulars on your current situation, but be sure to heavily research the "regular plan" and its benefits and drawbacks. It is a zero premium plan that once you hit your OOP max (I believe $2000 per year) you pay zero for everything else. It beats the heck out of the Choice plans. The only drawback that I can see is that preventive care is not covered (well visits, mammograms, etc).
The company probably won't mention it at all, the union is your best resource on it.

Not only will they not mention it during ground school they will say they don't know anything about it and even act shocked if someone brings it up. They desperately want to get rid of it. It works great for most but definitely do your research as there are a few items it doesn't cover. Most people say you can get around that but it depends if you want to play that game and have a dr that will play along.
