There's 40 -300's scheduled to be operating past 2017. They're parking they next year when the Max comes online.
FAA says you can't fly the MAX and the -300 so the company wanted to make the -300 and MAX base specific (subset) until they retired all the classics. That was in TA1 which was voted down and the union has no desire to agree to any side letter that doesn't have a new CBA attached. Company could have their way if they agreed to a CBA worth voting in...but they seem more inclined to stall.

What we will not agree to is flying the Max until we have a new contract.

It is my understanding that swa has a one for one replacement on the -300s from a Chinese carrier. Source for this was an LCA. Company is not shrinking, it's growing. Don't let scare tactics push you in one direction.

For the OP, subsets are different pilot groups (a sub-set of the total group) within the company to fly different types. It typically comes with different pay scales. Think Delta with all the different airplanes they fly. All delta pilots are delta pilots, but not all delta pilots fly 747s.
As I've heard it, when Boeing made the Max they didn't come up with a training plan. They left it up to SWA to do it. The FAA said the classics and Max are different enough that they'd be different types, meaning SWA would need two groups of pilots. More scheduling headaches, more mx issues, etc.
If all SWA company employees believe that we're getting rid of the classics early because of the "greedy" pilots, then I say "you're welcome". Good riddance.
Without a heart it's just a job.
