I don't have any insider hiring information but there are 150 retirements over the next 12 months so almost all the remaining new hires for the year will be offset by those retirements. Looking at manning right now, I see undermanning almost every weekend, lots of premium went out in February and the first 2 weekends in March which is typically pretty slow. At least compared to the summer.
We could probably absorb an additional 200 pilots right now without any growth. Add another 200 for retirements/attrition/vacation, and I can easily see 500+ new hires for 2017.

They still need to hire another 260. That dosent mean the 616-260= 356 have gone through training it just means they been offered class dates. They didn't know the real numbers but around 100 hired and online this yr so far with another 100+ somewhere in the training process right now.
In the next 4 yrs they want to hire 2000 pilots. So 2000-the 616 for this yr will be what's left for the next 3 yrs. Was told they'd divide that up relatively even.
350 upgrades this yr to do. I think that's why there is a slow down during the summer plus they need us out flying.
Shouldn't be as bad as last summer but we'll be short again. So plenty of flying to pick up!

I count 174 added to the seniority list since January 1. 4 less than advertised for Jan and 6 less than planned for February. Spoke with crew planning and was told the biggest class size they are allowed is 30 (including requals and instructors). Usually 24 actual new hires per class. Interested to see if they really reach 616 for 2016.

Just FYI for west coast mil guys who are interested:
Southwest Airlines will be sending its Chief of Pilot Hiring as well as the Southwest Military Pilot Liaison to Travis AFB on Friday April 1st (no foolin'). They would like to invite all interested pilots as well as those who already work for Southwest to meet with them between 3:00pm and 6:00 pm at the Airman and Family Readiness Center. The Chief of Pilot Hiring, Rocky Calkins, will be giving a presentation at 3:15pm and at 4:45pm to all who are interested. Feel free to bring your resume or the resume of a friend you would like to recommend. For those who already fly for Southwest, the Pilot Military Liaison, John Freed, will be available to answer questions as well.
That was copied and pasted and I don't know any other details.

Actively recruiting on Air Force bases... amazing. Unfortunately for Rocky and the PD, the morale in the Air Force is "pretty darn good" right now according to the Chief of Staff. Good luck convincing all of those beat down mobility pilots that life on the civilian side is better than that in Mother Blue.
In all seriousness though, I hope they fill the room. I know UAL did a similar event at Andrews several months back and a few of the attendees are now on the line with them.
