The culture between the company and pilots is dead. Work groups still get along great and I have fun while at work.

In essence, unless you like the domiciles and neither wish to move or commute, WN pales in comparison to career earnings and progression at the legacies. Culture won't support me in retirement.
How long have you been here? Just wondering how long I have until I become so jaded that I encourage people to find work elsewhere.

I ran conservative numbers directly comparing a 12 year upgrade here versus a 7 year upgrade at Delta. The difference wasn't as much as you might think. Most of us wouldn't chase a 2.5 year upgrade to eternal reserve in NYC. Same goes for a 5-6 year (?) 737 upgrade in EWR at UAL. Upgrade at AA is still at 15-17 years. Yeah, those guys make more than us right now. That won't always be the case.

I'm up for the opportunity of coming over. I live in Dallas and even if some of the culture has changed, it has to be better than most other flying jobs. I understand retirement isn't where SW guys want it. Maybe the new TA will be able to address that need.

I know I'm obviously from the outside looking in but, when I talk to my friends at all the legacies, it sounds like SW can provide the quickest QOL despite the longer upgrade. That sounds good to me.

PS hows commuting between the junior bases and DAL?

I got PHX right out of training, hired November. Commuting hasn't been much of an issue--although the nonstop flights tend to be full which leaves several two leg flights. One problem is that PM trips tend to end in PHX after 8:45PM which is after the last SWA flight to DAL leaves. I've been able to make all of my PM trips by commuting in on start day. Basically, trips seem to be commutable only on one end.

If you don't want to pay for a hotel on the back side, there is a 10:45PM AA flight to DFW and a red eye as well if you really want to get home bad ($20 uber to DAL). Spirit also has some red eyes to DFW.

On reserve, the PM RAP starts at 1100 local time in PHX. So even a PM reserve block for me will be a crashpad the night before.

The rumor is that reserve is short in PHX...and I should be a lineholder by summer. In any case, I've got over 30 below me already with more on the way next month...

Great. Thanks for the heads up. Just thinking down the road. Right now I need the interview invite before everything else.

Don't forget that the Dart Rail connects DFW with our commuter parking lot at the GO for only $2.50. Takes about 40 minutes from gate A15 at DFW to Burbank station right across from the TOPS building. There is a KCM checkpoint right there in the A terminal where the train drops you off too! Orange line, one train, no changes. It's clean and quiet. I frequently ran into other pilots and FAs on there.

You can buy fares at the station but it's even easier to get the "Go Pass" app on your phone and buy fares as you're walking to the train.

I commuted to DFW for 2 years because SW didn't serve my city. It worked fantastic. I only paid for uber when I was in a BIG hurry and never during rush hour (train is faster)

Five years. Upgrade is part of it, but the larger part is the inability to move to a different airplane in the same seat. This would afford the ability to make more money without having to work 130 tfp every month for the rest of my career to keep up

I know there's only one airplane so what's the alternative? Pay rates equivalent to the big 3. Again, not the number one choice when you look at career progression, total pay and retirement.

Do you honestly think JW is going to bring us a contract that doesn't have those? AA has led us for a little over a year, UAL by mere months. DL's rates on the 737 essentially mirror ours.

Also, I checked with a UAL guy and the upgrade there is currently at 9 years for ex-CAL guys and 17 years for ex-UAL guys.

Remember with the upcoming mass retirements at the big 3. An AA new hire today should upgrade in as low as 7 years on a narrow-body. Not sure about a new hire today at UA but would imagine similar time frame.

Delta is like 2 years in NY.

Agree on all. However, age 67 or for that matter if they go to no retirement age at all; and you just chased an upgrade that doesn't exist. That's why the best bet in my opinion is going somewhere that pays well in the right seat. Cause that's all you are ever guaranteed.

As far as JW and SWAPA, I concur that there will not be a repeat of TA 1. It's all up to Gary now
