If you live in base you can make quite a lot extra even during your first year as any open time picked up from the company is paid at second year pay rate. Just a rough guess you could probably make about $6k per month as a commuter first year and maybe up to $8k if you live in base. It really depends how much you want to work and if you are willing to pick up trips out of multiple bases. Reserve lines are assigned 15 on call days per month mostly. Usually it's 4 on then 3 off each week then 3 and 3 the last week. Most hard lines give you 16-18 days off per month. We have 4 insurance options, all United Healthcare PPO. Monthly premiums range from around $350 for family coverage down to $0 depending which plan you choose.

Monthly bids close on the 9th the month prior for first round lines, which is what you will get as a new hire.

Monthly bidding runs from the 4th-9th of each month for the next month. Awards come out on the 9th a short time after bidding closes. If you happen to get a blank line, or relief line as they are called at some other airlines, you will have to bid a second time which runs from the 17th-19th.

In a nutshell...
There are a certain number of lines in the first round of bidding each month that are blank, i.e. There are no trips on it. You don't know what the days off are, where overnights are, am or pm, etc... After the first round of bidding, scheduling takes all the trips off of guys lines for vacation, training, etc... And throw these trips into the blank lines to be bid on in round two. If you were awarded a blank line in round 1, then you bid again in round 2 on these blank lines, but now they have all the trips that were pulled. They also add some reserve blocks into a handful of these lines and occasionally there are a few pure reserve lines in there also.
Hope that explains it for you.
