How much it pays is dependent upon whether I am able to hold the most lucrative lines with regard to trips dropped. There is a website to help sort vacation lines, but as with most things, seniority is the horsepower that makes stuff happen. I have very little horsepower.
I agree that our vacation pull system is great, and one of the reasons I'd never vote for PBS in any form.

As for the seniority aspect, the lines that typically work best for vacation pull are also the lines that are the worst to get if you have to actually fly them (weekend 4 days). Unless a couple of guys senior to you have the exact same week AND bid the same as you do, you're pretty likely to get a decent pull.

As far as how we use reserves I agree it's not the best but th alternative is to be on reserve for another yr or more if we want to have more reserves. For me I'll keep it the way it is.

Zap,
Having a junior vacation month is going to work in your favor. I had a week in July and bid on several weekend trips to get max vacation pull. I ended up getting like my 30th choice because all the weekend 4 day trips got bid by senior guys with vacation. I lucked into that week by hawking the trade boards.

2 weeks to start, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 18 years. New hires get a prorated vacation for 1st year based on hire date (less that a year employed, less that 2 weeks vacation...which is bumped together for 1 vacation period). Hope that helps.

I was hired in Dec. Since VAC is prorated I got 1 day this year. I got a blank line this month and bid a conflict and ended up getting paid 16.5 of my 19.5 3 day that they dropped.

19 off and 95 tfp this month using 1 day of vac.

Yep. A partial week isn't a bad thing. I almost wish we could take our vacation in 3 or 4 day chunks vs 7.

Agree completely. Or even use some vacation as a kind of "personal day" to drop a trip during times of need
