The way I read SWA Director of Operations Alan Kasher's letter of 6 Sep, 2013 is that ATN will fly the B717 through the month of Jan 2015 and park any remaining B717s on 1 Feb, 2015.

In the early 80's, 40 pink slips were being sent out. But only because SWAPA stepped in and negotiated temporary line pay reductions to keep everyone on property, did those slips get tossed.
It was short lived, but it did happen. Now, SWA has been very proud of showing off their no furlough badge for many years, and it is (mostly) deserved. But it wasn't earned without a little help back in the day.

In the interest of accuracy, I need to point out that Herb - in fact - did furlough. And yes, I mean pilots.

By doing so you give management the ability to cut your compensation anytime they want by simply threatening furloughs. Hold the line and call their bluff. Worst case, the furloughed guys have a better job to come back to.

Post 9-11 we were never below our contractual minimums. To SWA's credit they never asked for any relief in that area. We had many lines that were below our minimum but they added a block of pay to bring it up to the min. Additionally, guys that started class that week were reassured of their job security.
There was never any "threatening" of a furlough.

Can someone please explain to me what kind of leverage SWAPA has when it negotiates with management?
Honest question. It seems like without the threat of a strike/job action, labor has nothing. I don't see SWAPA ever calling a strike and I also don't see the pilots starting any sort of organized grass roots job action. If that's the case, you're forced to accept what management gives you out of the kindness of their heart.
