When there's a decent amount of hiring how long are guys sitting reserve in places like OAK/LAS/PHX?

It's interesting that the west is so junior for SWA whereas every other airline, the west is senior!

That just depends on the rate of hiring. Had a buddy who was hired in January and bids a blank line in Phoenix. I was hired in June and could hold a blank line in Oakland once the new hires go on reserve. So I guess the answer is it depends, but around 3-4 months with the rate of hiring early this year. Just depends on the size of the base, the number of reserve lines, and how senior the base is. Right now, Oaktown is back to being pretty junior for the time being. For the next few months, it is going to be all transitions, and they are all fairly senior FO's, so who knows how it will shake out.

Blank line is like a build up? Trips and reserve days?

A blank line contains all of the trips/reserve that were pulled from other FO's boards for vacation, training, or Mil leave. So you can get all flying, all reserve or a mix. It all depends on which blank line you get. If there are 40 blank lines, line 1 is the most senior, 40 the most junior. After first round is awarded, scheduling builds the blank lines. Those with a blank line bid a second time and are then awarded their line for the month.

Thanks!

Still enjoying it over there?

Canada's WestJet offloads ten B737-700s to Southwest - ch-aviation.com

Forgive me if this has already been posted.

They are snatching up used 700s and off lease aircraft, but as far as I know, the fleet is fairly flat through the end of the year. Believe me, I can't wait for the sundown of some of the older classics. Those things are getting pretty long in the tooth and are absolutely miserable in the summer.

Hopefully once the older 300s and the 500s are gone, stories like this will signal actual growth in the number of pilot seats.

I am hoping to get on before the 300s and 500s leave. I don't really like EFIS so the "classics" would be fine by me. Wish they still had the -200. Yes, I know, Iam crazy.

The only thing I really don't care for in the classics is the smell from the forward lav. It's like working near a portapotty all summer long. Wish they could deodorize those somehow.

Just read AirBerlin is getting rid of all their current and future 737's. ~45 -700/800's.

Seems like just the kind of thing SWA is looking for.
