It's likely that the retirement job stuff you hear is from those that put in their 20 years of active duty and they truly are retired from the military. I don't know that they use that phrase to mean how you are taking it, but I do understand your frustration.

However, the way it was said was very condescending in my humble opinion. In a retort, talking about how a civilian would take a lump sum pay in the form of a bonus was even worse. This isn't my first rodeo, nor is it that of many here. Each of us has to make informed descions based on the future. To say that this is a retirement job is just plain insulting in my unqualified opinion. That's all I'm saying.
