On the app, is a FAA Designee the same as a check airman authorized by the FAA to observe new captains?
At my airline they call them "designated" line check airmen, or DLCA's.

I'm Army and have flown as a contractor with Army, AF, Navy, civilian and Marines, and can say theres nothing special about any of us other than the airplanes and things we've done mil wise. As for AF not really impressed, Navy pretty sharp guys so far and Marines are funny! ;-) All great guys/gals, but (civ vs. mil) everyones different. I like pilots who can actually fly and not just talk about what they have done.

When it comes to the application I may be wrong, but to me an FAA Designee is a Designated Examiner. The guy who conducts a check ride and can issue an FAA Form 8060-4 (temporary airman certificate). Like I said...that's just me, but I'm sure somebody on here knows.

Hmmm. You might be right... Anyone else care to chime it?

I think Designees would also cover those check airman authorized to do the fed rides during Captain IOE. We call them Operating Experience Observers. They take the place of the fed on a fed ride if the feds can't make it. Perhaps the same thing as your DLCA?

That's exactly what I'm talking about! Thanks Xdash!

I believe they are different. Each fleet type should have an APM, or Aircrew Program Manager (FAA). The APM is then in charge of selecting APDs, or Aircrew Program Designees (FAA Designee). The APDs are authorized to conduct captain type rides and issue a type rating (simulator). There should be an LOA between the company and the FAA authorizing a line check airman to then occupy the jumpseat in lieu of the FAA for the Fed ride. This would be an OEO check airman...may differ from company to company. If you're a DE (FAA Designated Examiner) or an APD, then I would check the box. Otherwise, probably best to not check it. I was specifically asked about my OEO check airman duties at my interview, just for clarification, because that position is called something else at SWA.

I'm going to keep the box checked… The question on the application simply isn't specific enough. In my case, I have been designated with a letter to occupy the jumpseat in leu of the FAA during the "fed ride". If I'm ever lucky enough to interview, I'm sure it will come up, and I will tell them just that.
If they are asking if you are a designated FAA examiner, that's what the box needs to say. The currently stated "FAA designee" is pretty ambiguous.

The Duke is right. If you are granted an interview, it could look like to them that you are trying to check boxes just to get an interview. Kinda risky in my opinion. There are other places to explain what you are qualified to do in the check airmen questions.
