Dear ALPA -
The purpose of this post is to personally thank you. For years and years I have repeatedly posted here and elsewhere why I don't like ALPA. Today is a new day. I LUV ALPA!!
The single most important asset to Southwest Airlines is its culture. Herb Kelleher, Colleen Barrett, and now Gary Kelly have worked tirelessly to preserve this one truly unique asset that Southwest Airlines possesses to the exclusion of all other airlines. It is the unique and truly priceless asset that makes Southwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines.
Today, ALPA, via 8 individuals, told Gary Kelly "You are not in charge, ALPA is." The one thing I can promise ALPA is that Gary Kelly is not going to throw away what is unique about Southwest Airlines because of a contentious integration with ALPA and AirTran. This is not ALPA's airline, it belongs to the current employees, customers, and shareholders of Southwest Airlines.
I am truly sorry for the AirTran pilot group at large because they will now never get to vote on their future - 8 ALPA representatives just did that for them. Whether any individual AirTran pilot liked or hated the proposed SLI is now moot. Their individual voices are now irrelevant. Eight individuals just cast the fate of 1600 pilots and their families.
Southwest Airlines, via a wholly owned entity by the name of Guadalupe Holding already owns AirTran. By voting no, all ALPA has done is reject the offer of employment from our Dallas leadership. I truly wish the AirTran pilots and their families the best of luck for their future.
So again, thank you ALPA for acting so true to your nature. Each day you reaffirm every belief I have come to hold about your union.
Very truly yours,
JDFlyer

JD,
So you're saying, sarcastically, that AirTran pilots are all about to be put on the street, right?
Which is a really fantastic thing for you because you're a new hire at SWA and will now be getting a fleet of 140 aircraft that will need to be staffed in short order, right?
Just curious, you're fanning the flames and I just want to help make sure it's clear.

btw, ALPA really doesn't have anything to do with it. I don't think DALPA, APA, IBT or even SWAPA if the shoe was on the other food would've voted this in nor would have JB if given the opportunity to vote in mass. And fwiw, light to occasional moderate ALPA hater here.

Now I know that happy employees make for profit, but to give up profit to keep a bunch of primadonnas happy will cost him in shareholder goodwill.
SWA has joined the ranks of "just another airline." The employees just haven't figured that out yet.

My, such confident predictions....especially from someone with no skin in the game. I really have come to love these APC forums! Although they should probably be renamed the Delta Masters of the Universe Opining on Various & Sundry Topics of Which They Know Not forums.

So you're saying they're blocking it... therefore... there are options that made binding arbitration not so binding.

And...
so after mild "research" in the search engine of this website:

not saying that's a good thing. just saying, this got muddied last year and I'm not sure if SWAPA or FL ALPA doesn't like whatever comes next what their recourse is but they may have some.

The court begs to differ:
At this point, neither the West Pilots
nor USAPA can be certain what seniority proposal ultimately
will be acceptable to both USAPA and the airline as part of
a final CBA. Likewise, it is not certain whether that proposal
will be ratified by the USAPA membership .....
Thus, even under the district court’s injunction
mandating USAPA to pursue the Nicolau Award, it is
uncertain that the West Pilots’ preferred seniority system ever
would be effectuated. ....
USAPA’s final proposal may yet be one
that does not work the disadvantages Plaintiffs fear, even if
that proposal is not the Nicolau Award.

And those are THE MOST OUTRAGEOUS comments ever made by a court of law. This implies that BINDING is never really BINDING. This highlights the problems when you have a "Tyranny of the majority" like no other. I feel for the West guys, but also for the UAL/CAL guys as this idiotic judge has now thrown their seniority list integration into a complete black hole.
I am amazed and shocked. This industry has hit a new low.
