Previous gig we would leave west coast around 11pm, one leg to some east coast city landing around 6am or so.
Go to hotel for about 23 hours and fly the early AM on day three back to base, which body clock feels like another red eye.
These sucked and they were brutal on the body. Basically landing and walking through the airport like a zombie on day three.

Thankfully we won’t have that issue but I hold no hope that the optimizer won’t find a way to make it punishing.

Agreed. Used to love the EWR-LAS 2-day. Been a while, but I believe we left around 08-0830, land in Vegas around 1100 and leave that night around midnight. Get back to EWR the next morning 08-0830 about the same time you left 24 hours earlier. If you're the type that doesn't need a whole lot of sleep, and you're local, it was a great trip. Essentially a 10/11-hour one-day.

If I had to bet on Southwest, it would be their unmatched capacity for screwing up a wet dream. You can almost guarantee they’ll find a way to make these soul crushing on a long enough timeline. For now, though, as a commuter, I’ll probably give em a whirl. I can nap like nobody’s business.

Red eyes take a huge toll on your body even if you feel "ok" during the flight. That being said, some people love them for the schedule efficiciency, but it seems to be an extreme minority.
