You can count on it. A huge percentage of HI-mainland flying at all the carriers is all night flying, and they’re almost always full. I’ve flown widebodies out with a 2300 departure that were oversold with triple digit stand by lists.

it's the only way to make a connection consistently. I remember when Swa started hawaii flying you could by ticket from BWI to HNL but not in reverse because of lack of connections.

There are a couple reasons why they are constructing them this way.
First, the contract won't let them put more than one leg on a redeye duty period. You have to have proper rest prior to the leg, which doesn't really fit with the regular schedule, so the entire trip would have to be redeye which makes no sense if you are ending on the east coast since you would have to start from the east coast.
Second, any other way they did it would end in a dystopian nightmare of fatigue calls and I think they know it.
I think these lines will go very senior. I would highly consider bidding them if I were east coast based.
