Every airline flies redeyes out of Hawaii and they do just fine. We're re-inventing the wheel as usual.
I wouldn't want to touch a plane prior to doing a redeye leg that's over 4 hours long... Not very efficient trips, but very low block time which ought to be popular with tournament level players trying to keep their block low.

I think we are talking about the need to have pilots in positon and/or reserves to cover flying. Southwest has this thing about building trips/ustilizling reserves such that they can conveiently cover flying at mega stations that are not domicales, and cover HI to mainland flying.

They've announced redeyes out of non crew bases already (SMF and SAN) so I could be all wrong.

I don't know that they are reinventing anything. the proposed redeye pairings they're shown us look very civilized, once you accept it's a redeye. I have no idea what hawaii red eye pairings will look like, this was just my own guess. Embedded reserve makes more sense than intra-island flying to cover the redyes...
Not sure if it's demand-driven, or they want airplanes in the islands for the early AM interisland flying, or they think the connectivity to the rest of our network is better by departing Hawaii bright and early in the morning and have the connections everywhere in the afternoon which would keep the travel down to 1 calendar day - leaving the islands in the AM and arriving wherever they're going in the evening the same day.
Along those lines, an interesting footnote, I flew an early morning OGG-LAS a few weeks ago. Completely full flight. Only something like 22 were going to LAS. The rest were all connecting with a surprising number going as far east as BDL, MDW, CMH, and ATL of all places.

Talking about Hawaii and why we aren't starting redeyes out of Hawaii. I don't know why they may be skittish about joining the rest of the airline world flying redeyes out of Hawaii without an island crew base hence my comment about re-inventing the wheel.

For years they also said. LGA,BOS,DCA have to much taxi time and we can't make money . They also blame meltdowns on the odd shape of Florida. They also say we are right where we want to be . We are laser focused.
