Many ways to skin the cat. I find this particular way to be highly annoying and reeking of insecurity, especially when there are many other ways to get the point across without treating your FO as the extension of your autopilot.

If the FO is approaching my comfort limit, I'll simply say something along the lines of "you look a little high/fast... think you'll make it?" and watch them adjust their path and configuration. If it still doesn't look right, it's two words "Go Around."

The FO's tend to learn more from their mistakes than from an insecure and overbearing captain hovering over and moving their flight controls without being asked.

This all day. I would rather teach someone a valuable lesson that they are going to take forward. Obviously there are times and legs where the risk of a go around is greater than the benefit of a teaching point, and I will do some coaching on those legs, but I mostly let them make their own mistakes and then tell them my caveman tools for energy management when we are zero airspeed.

Well, that’s certainly one way to look at it.

aslong as safety isnt a concern I let them continue until they know they messed up and go around or i say go around. Regardless they'll probably never do that again. Even after my 25 yrs of greatness I still have a go around or two. No big deal. Learn and move on.
I also say if you're always super conservative then you'll not be ready for more challenging times.

Nope..

I respectfully submitt that this is a classic Nervous Nelly Micromanager move. If you don't like something or think it's unsafe, say something. Don't put your hands on that lever every time it's my leg, as if I don't know when to configure..

correct. Don’t try to out passive aggressive me. If you’re concerned, speak up.

If I see you hovering by the flaps, I’m asking for the gear first at 2500 agl and then configuring on the flap speeds just to make you look silly.

I love all these responses. The “don’t tell me” and “I’ll show you” is quite the culture. Judging by all that, speaking up won’t necessarily make you feel good either. If the hand makes you uncomfortable, then as PF say “I’ll configure at ___.” The breakdown in communication could also be from you.

I've done that, not to "make them look silly" but because that's how I was flying that day, tailwinds and high ATC directed speeds, etc. You could cut the tension with a non-serrated butter knife

Of course, I've had days where it simply "made sense" to throw almost every single notch of flaps 10 kts below limiting speed.

Whatever lets me comply with ATC speeds and try to keep the "throttles" at idle until around 1400' is what I'll do. I only rarely consult a stuffed comfort animal first.
