This reminds me of a few very similar posts before the airtran merger. Some posters here (that were on flightinfo) begged for a buyout. Then when it happened they demanded relative seniority and acted completely indignant when that wasn't what was offered. No more mergers. Please...
Apparently, people have very short memories.

I thought about that, but my UAL class is a month after my scheduled SWA class. I can either:
• Inform SWA now that I'm not showing up, thereby freeing up a spot for another pilot. I would prefer to give as much notice as possible.
• Ask to be withdrawn from class and placed in the deferred hiring pool (unlikely to be granted but I guess I can ask)
• Show up to SWA class and then bail for UAL class a month later. I realize this may be technically the smartest thing to do, but it strongly goes against my instinct of doing what's right. I wouldn't feel right about choosing this option.
I guess I can try #2 and see what happens...

Number 2 could be a shrewd move if they go for it. Southwest WILL need more in the future. But if they don't, or you don't want to risk asking...
Number 3 would be the choice that you have earned. And likely the best for you and your family. Southwest will see some bottom end attrition, I'm sure they expect it and may even want it. Don't feel bad about making tough choices that affect the rest of your life. No airline management is going to help you, it is not your job to risk your career to help them.

Oh I know, trust me.
Question is, which would be worse, a short but permanent commute to AA with rapid seniority movement and hopefully plenty of guys added to the list below me within a reasonable duration of time (furlough protection in case things go sour)....or living in base at the very very bottom of SWA's list, and therefore being the absolute first to be dropped if SWA decides to furlough even 80 people?

Permanent commute would be worse if the music stops.
Take your SWA class date check it out, see how things are going and then go from there. If you're going to leave, I would go SWA then UAL skipping AA all together if you can live in base at the other two. Theres virtually nothing offered at AA that makes it worth commuting for long term over living in base at SWA or UAL.

Number 1 is out. They probably won't backfill it and even if they did, who's to say it's not with another pilot in your same position?

that part could get worked out.. possibly with a 5yr fence. It would be a perfect addition to our route map.
on a side note.. we need to start charging for carryon bags and force customers to use the 2 free checked. This will speed up boarding dramatically..

and remind the ops agents that passengers need to be boarding at 30 prior….not making the walk at 30 prior, asking the FA’s, conversing, then boarding at 25 minutes 🙄
