Default Southwest Redeyes

I read that Southwest will start doing redeyes early next year.

Why haven’t they done redeyes before this? How will this affect staffing and pilot utilization?

I think this is fantastic news…as long as I don’t have to fly it.

…although double time might wake me up.

I read once that their legendary IT system that long was unable to accept foreign currency also could not handle a flight that covered two calendar days. True… idk

That'll happen years before any transcon redeyes or redeye Caribbean turns.

what happened to the flights that got in real late then left early in the morning allowing the pax to stay overnight in the airport?
did those tickets just go away?
Rode in F9 the other day and the pax next to me was doing just that. Landed at midnight and took 0600 flight out all on the same ticket
FWIW I'd do a true redeye but not one where we'd have to fly 3 more legs or even 1 more.
The way the language is set up now. As long as you dont fly in the 0200-0400 window they can add more flying. Meaning- you land at 0150 then sit till the 0500 flight and fly 1 or 2 more. Guaranteed fatigue call from me on that.
Depart 2200 from the west coast and land 0500 east coast and either be done or go to bed and fly one more back on day 3 and I'll do that

They've been talking about red eyes for awhile. I think a consideration for doing them is gate space. There is only so much, and they need a place to park all 800+ jets at night currently. A jet flying a redeye doesn't need an RON gate or ramp spot.

They'll need more pilots and a 3rd reserve shift...which apparently has been talked about in negotiations.

The eastbound Hawaii red eyes are so brutal. The only thing worse is a turn.
