Choose SWA or UA based out of LAS?

How and why would anyone with any self worth get off on thinking that they are going to makes substantially less than their peers ? I think it is more seeing what the future holds . I wish I had your optimism, History has a way of repeating itself.

lol! There is an FO that left here in 21 for UAL and begged to come back end of 22. He was in class Jan 23’. He hated UAL. I am far from SWA LUV. Getting life career information here isn’t the best idea.

A very real consideration should be how soon do you want to upgrade, and are you willing to commute in order to chop YEARS off your upgrade wait and secure your spot on the list while things are good.
At United, LAX narrowbody CA upgrade is only a year. Anyone willing to commute and living in the West should not disregard that as a real option. Will United's new contract convince enough senior FOs to quit bypassing which will slow upgrades? I dunno. Right NOW however, LAX CA in the A320 and 737 is available immediately off probation. Living in LAS or PHX that could be a big consideration when compared to SWA's 7+ yr upgrade. I can't imagine SWA's upgrades getting much sooner than they are now. As soon as hiring tapers off, our very flat retirement curve and single fleet type will push upgrades right back up to 10 years.
Commuting to reserves sucks no matter what company you work for, so don't use United's high bypass numbers as an excuse to discount it as an option. At SWA, you get to wait 7+ years for the chance to commute to reserves. Why wait unnecessarily?

Now to add to flensr's post... there is a big reason why there's such a high bypass rate at United and why captain upgrades go as junior as they do. I happen to commute on United quite a bit and have quite a few friends there, including some who are junior captains. It's not all roses there either, but don't tell our drama queens that. The reserve captain gig SUCKS there. It's not that ours doesn't, but having seen their schedules, and what they're paid, I wouldn't chase the upgrade there unless I lived in domicile. I know I would stay an FO there until I could hold a line as a captain in a NB.
Fleet choices are also a big plus at United... none of that at Southwest.

Quite frankly, it's you drama queens that are scaring the sh!t outta me because none of you seem to pay any attention to the language, work rules, and the overall package. It's all in the numbers, and it's evident by your assertion that you're making 35% less than your peers. Just curious, is that including their time spent on furlough or not?
When we get a TA, I'm willing to bet that not one of you drama b!tches are gonna offer any reasonable explanation for your NO vote. You will sit there with your holier-than-thou attitude, act all superior, and you won't put up a single, reasonable analysis of a TA, let alone something along the lines of JL that will motivate someone to consider your point of view and also vote NO. Instead, pretty sure you'll have chickensh!t one-liners. Prove me wrong.

That has been the line here for 50 years. It was one of GK favorite lines to the captain upgrades. I am pretty sure I will be getting paid 35 percent less than my peers due to you and the 40 percent like you that will vote yes to anything.

I don’t need a medium rare bacon wrapped filet for a DEN-COS turn. Some of you will vote no just to vote no no matter how good the deal is.
I don’t want to be around the woe is me miserable SOB’s. Unless you’re over 60 you’ll upgrade within a year or fly WB at the big 3. Go be miserable there.

Same reason some people get off on getting gagged, beaten, tied up, pi$$ed on, having toys up their Hershey Highway, you tell me....
Only if you let it repeat itself.... When was the last time this pilot group was this unified? When was the last time this pilot group had a SAV? In other words, was willing to burn it all down to get the industry leading contract?

I just turned 49 and currently hold a CJO for both SWA and UA and have the exact same class date for both at the end of this month. We do not intend to move from LAS for at least a year and I do not want to commute, however we are thinking of moving to Northern AZ (Sedona area) within a few years which leads me to favoring SWA and getting based in PHX at that point. Thoughts?

With UA, I should be able to get based at LAS very quickly and upgrade to CA at a year. Even though I'll be a RES CA for a few years, at least I'll be living in domicile. This seems to be the way to go, although moving to Northern AZ would be out of the question which might not make my wife as happy. After a few years, maybe I'll be able to afford a second home there.
