Yup. And many of our colleagues don’t realize that it’s even an option on the 737… in addition to (but not limited to) a fuel totalizer, retractable sunscreens, printers, electric seats, brake temperature, autoland…

They’re gonna be forced to do autoland if they want redeyes….rest of that stuff I had on my RJ. No idea why you’d take it out of a jet if it’s standard or go cheap on a software fix that’ll save you $ in the long run.

They told us in UPG this year it was something the Fed’s wanted. Prob why we’re not doing true redeyes even though it’s been in the CBA since 2016….they just haven’t found a reason where the cost to train everyone was acceptable…til now maybe.

Heard the same. The ONLY reason we have a hud is because it was cheaper than the auto land option. Everyone thinking it’s because “military” is fooling themselves.

HUD is cheaper and Morris planes came with them. That's why we use it vs autoland for cat 3.
I personally like the HUD now that I have gotten comfortable with it after the zero training I received, but it isn't a replacement for autoland. When the chips are down and you are tired after flying a long day and have to do a cat 3 in the dark of the night, the last thing you want to do is click off the autopilot and put one circle inside the next one for 5 minutes.

because our maintenance program is run by a narcissist and always has been. God forbid they one additional thing to look at.
I have heard that the FAA requires it if we want to do it.

IDK about other airlines but I've flown all night and never was required to have an operational auto land. This may be a SW industry leading thing.
