I typically hand fly to 18,000 feet in the climb and then turn it off once we are given vectors for a visual approach on landing. But I still enjoy flying the airplane. YMMV.
Overachiever!

I usually wait until the flaps are up, at least most of the time. If I am flying past 10,000 feet, something is dreadfully wrong and anyone close to me should be concerned.
I do click it off (and kill the flight directors) and fly visual approaches because they are actually fun and interesting depending on where you get approach to actually clear you.

I like to hand fly but there are times where doing it on departure only makes it tough on your PM and makes you a douche. Goes something like this: “SetSpeedFlaps1ClimbThrustSouthwest568TurnLeftHead ing270ClimbAndFlapsUpMaintain9erThousandSpeedInter ventionContactDepartureOneTwoSixPointHeadingSelect TwSeven”.

that works when ATC leaves you alone and isn’t constantly changing your heading or altitude. I’m not making the other guy do all the radios, FMS, etc so I can hand fly. I kick it on after 2-3k’ and off when cleared for a visual. If I want to hand fly a plane around, I’ll go rent one. 😂

I don’t know about a douche, but I definitely have to “monitor” a little harder. Just about every altitude deviation asap starts with “I was hand flying”.

Yuuuuuuuup.
Every Denver and LAS weather packet note has an origin story that begins with someone hand flying "the jet" in the climb.

Don’t say “the jet”. People will assume things about you. Bad things.

Prospect and myself prefer to keep our hand flying skills sharp and honed just in case a straight bid flying opportunity presents itself and the rest of you guys relying on automation can't cut the mustard.

We can show you with hand gestures in the Phoenix lounge all the various required complex engine out profiled.

Don't get lazy and complacent out there. Bid straight, early, and often. Especially if it benefits YOU.

I don’t know why but your recent posts are odd.
