Military Application Timeline
I have a question that I haven’t seen addressed yet. I’m 16 months out from military retirement and working through the preparation process now. I’ve seen announcements that United will accept and interview up to 2 years prior to retirement or separation, and Delta is going up to 1 year prior. Is anyone familiar with SWA’s policy or AA?
My plan is to start applications in September, at the 1 year point, with both United and Delta, but would love to get interviews with SWA and AA as well.
Is anyone else already working through the process and have good information on timelines?

No stated policy I’m aware of, especially any dedicated carve-outs for folks coming out of the military. However what you do have in your favor is a pulse and a resume that’s now probably light years ahead of the average applicant. For reference back in 2016 I applied 12 months prior to my availability date and 2 weeks later got an interview invite. So yes, I’d say publish at a year then make sure you’re keeping up with “reapplying” on the SWA careers page during each window.

If SWA is your #1 choice I'd apply early and often. Your app might sit for awhile, but they were fairly quick reaching out to me (applied a year out, first contact about 2 months later).
If SWA is lower on your list I'd wait till you're a year out. Because keeping 7 applications updated is a pain.

Back in 2016/17. I applied about a year out. There’s a block to put your availability date. Just make that date realistic and they’ll invite you when they want. If you have a ton of leave, and depending on your mil job, you can take leave in chunks long enough for training and IOE, then for every trip until your final out. Getting in class a month early is worth more over a career than selling back leave.

I would apply now; I’m slowly sending them out, and like you am about 16 months from terminal, 19 months from retiring, and I’ve already been contacted by Delta and SWA. The first and only 2 I’ve submitted as of yet, and I didn’t wait long at all to be contacted.
