I think the issue with WN at least and the WARN notices is that it wouldn't have helped, like, at all. Estimates range from saving them a couple weeks to a couple of days. It was totally uncalled for, shot from the hip panic move. If the 1221 would have saved the company another year or so too keep the doors open, I could somewhat understand it, but these letters wouldn't have saved anything had the government not stepped in.
Even if they didn't issue WARN letters, would SWA be in any different situation? Furlough or not, SWA only offers so much.

Fair point. It's really hard to compete with Dreamliners and A350s, business class seats to Paris and Tokyo when all you have is 737s. Nobody grows up dreaming of another Lubbock overnight.

That's not quite true. Granted I don't have much knowledge of other airlines' trip construction, but I hate 4 day trips so I never fly them. Hell I don't even like 3 day trips, but I'm not senior enough (yet) to hold 2 days and turns. Even then most of the 3 days I fly are really 2.5 days: late enough start day 1 that I have the whole morning and early afternoon at home or whatever. I do wish we had a true "reserve" system where I could sit home more often than not, but if that were the case it would arguably go senior in which case I might not be able to hold it anyway. I understand having the option of multiple fleets and widebodies is good for the gander, but for me living in base and barely working is pretty darn good. And if we can get finally get a top tier contract (it might happen!) it will only get better.
