And then got to hand over controls just before landing so the captain could take over. Bizarre.

We did the same at USAir on the DC9 on CAT2 approaches back in the day. It didn't have Autoland so one pilot flew the approach, the other was focused outside looking for the lights. If the Captain saw the lights he was going to land. If not, the FO was spring loaded to go around.

Not ideal but not entirely stupid.

Now, taking the autothrottles out of an airplane that is equipped with them... that's another story. Hopefully recertification of Autoland on our airplanes is coming soon. It's far safer.

And usually humbling on the 757 as it glides on to a perfect, smooth landing on centerline, on speed!

737 doesn't have a rudder servo so Autoland is usually rough (at least it was on the -300/-400 that I flew), but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye.

It was pretty damn smooth in the AirTran -700s. Not bad at all.

im a little confused by the language. Some examples of how it would be applied would be helpful.

I don't have strong feelings about it either way since I live close to DFW, but I'd have to see the pros and cons to decide if it's a deal killer for me or not.

for now; it doesn't affect me but it would have been better to propose it to the group with language and examples before agreeing to an AIP.
Especially since there are strong rumours the company wants more.
I'm worried the NC is rushing again

With the amount of crying going on at TOF, I’m surprised it hasn’t been talked about here.

bottom line.. it’s a good thing. The big 3 all do it and my friends there enjoy the flexibility. If we want things to get better, we need to embrace change.

I would tie it to hotel language as a minimum. And I would include Bwi/iad/DCA.
