At one time there was no ATIS template. We wrote the ATIS on the back of the napkin that the FA gave us with the load count. The story is there was a MDW FO who was upset that Captains didn't write the ATIS in the format that he wanted. He came up with the template, then made copies using the copy machine in the various crew lounges and put them in FO boxes. FltOps thinking that is what the pilots wanted started having them formally printed, then to save money added the template to the weather package. Now whether the story about the FO is true I don't know but that's what I heard when the photcopies first appeared in the FO's boxes. What I do know is that we did go from no template, just the napkin, to the photcopied template to the printed template to the weather package template.

As another veteran of the napkin years, I will say the ATIS template did make it easier to interpret your co-star's transcriptions. Everyone had their own idea about the best way to arrange ATIS and gate info on a napkin...some made more sense than others. But going forward, in my cockpit (yes, I said cockpit!) no one is writing down ATIS info on anything unless they really want to.

I am so thankful that we got this issue hammered out. It is crucial to all of us and our futures.
Next up : seat full forward and up or down and back? Radar tilt full up? Turn down the screens and lights at the gate? Intercom on with chewing and snorting the whole flight or turn it off?
We have got to solve all of these problems here so we can get it codified in the contract.

it's all in the FMS in messages anyway. Why can't someone look at the messages again if they forget?
