I disagree, the union does not need a salesman, the union needs a butcher. They need someone who wants to burn this place to ground. They need someone who is willing to drive the stock price down 50 percent to get what we deserve. They need someone who isn’t afraid to get down and dirty to expose this house of cards for what it is and continue to do it until we have strangled that golden goose for everything it has left. Time to air our dirty laundry to the flying public and let it be known that current management is not needed here. They sure as heck can not manage well as the latest fiasco shows….time to play dirty.
But I of course am on the extreme side but someone has to counteract the TDs of the world….

I’m gonna chime in here. Lew, you post some fantastic stuff. But engaging in a personal tit for tat with a new hire isn’t helpful. I’d say that’s pi$$ing into the wind. A new hire anywhere is gonna be all gung-ho about their new employer, and you as a perceived malcontent are gonna be seen as a troublemaker. That’s normal, and to be expected. Perhaps a better approach would be to explain in short bursts something for them as a new hire to keep an eye out for, and why their vote matters and what some of the major issues are that could impact them very early on in their career at Southwest i.e. going on a medical and how it’s woefully inadequate here.
Bleedair, welcome aboard. Concentrate on training, and start learning the contract. That’s the playbook. Southwest is great in some ways, and it falls well short in other ways. We have a fantastic pilot group, and one cannot overstate that. It is contract time, and the company is stonewalling us. It’s immensely frustrating repeating the words “yep, told you so” over and over again. In the end, it will get done. Support your union, and demand and expect nothing but the best and industry leading. Remember, anything we leave on the table is going to Wall Street and executives. You vote on where the money goes, so don’t be afraid to vote NO. In fact, I was on probation the last time we were voting on the contract, and I voted against our current contract. Realize you’ll be fed koolaid the entire time you’re there because you get a vote on any new TA, and they count on you not having seen the other side of the coin just yet. That’s why it’s important to keep a perspective, ask many questions and listen.
Good luck in training.

Ha! I followed all that. Public forum ya know. What do you want, a pic of me and your old lady on my flight deck? She prefers the view from 450.
You ever wonder why you negs can’t get more of the vote? You’d rather eat your own than focus on the issues. If I didn’t know a dozen WN lineswine that tell me y’all are in the vast minority, I’d be turned off but the truth is the SWA pilot group is awesome and somehow APC has the 5 guys that want to waste their time off complaining about everything.
FOCUS….us pilots are in complete control over the contract AND can enjoy daily life at the same time. If you want a contract, ya gotta get more votes and your not gonna do it by attacking everybody that doesn’t hate their job.

I suspect my second career will be much like my first (USAF). Each assignment is what you make of it. Come in with a positive attitude, work hard, try to get along, don't antagonize and try to make things better, then you will probably enjoy it as long as the work rules are decent (from what I can tell they are). Have a negative, pessimistic attitude and you'll probably hate life.

I can vote NO with a smile. You can send me your note on your “no really, I wanted transports” letterhead.
