Pilots are our own worst enemies.
New York in a year or Oakland in 10 - if we're still around.

This requires a brain surgeon-level IQ to figure out.

there was a convention of lizards holding court in the Dallas lounge with that exact line of reasoning. I don’t think they appreciated my driveby “well, at least it ain’t Oakland in 9 years” comment.

Dallas flight ops seems to think New York is the worse place in the world. ( Who wants to go to New York ?). I guess they have never been to gang infested OAK .

I was once NY based, it was a price of cake. I used AirBnB for a crash pad (walking distance) and there are lots of flights. The big issue at the time was delays. You’d show up for a noon commute which was delayed until 4, but the 8am was just boarding so you’d get on it. As far as flying in and out of NY, I prefer it over some other places.

It was my second favorite commute, DTW was number one. DC and DFW tied for last. ATL was ok except for the flow delays.

YMMV

Don't forget the drugged up zombies on BART if you were to commute to SFO. Between zombies and gangbangers, it can get sporty.

Also, shouldn't being an FFDO be a requirement to go to OAK? I mean, at least in theory you can shoot back.

Don’t forget OAK is a FedEx domicile and mini hub now. Lots of great options to commute space positive with those fine people!

I just changed bases. I’ve been two from the bottom for the last six months and the ONLY thing keeping me there was a day time, nonstop, commute on UPS that made my experience as a commuter stress free. I’m gonna miss that. It was like having my own NetJets account. 😆 Space positive, hot meal if I wanted one. Best part of my (work) week was heading to domicile on those guys.

Making $150k as an FO at Delta vs SWA

Delta
$150K + 16%NEC + 5.7% Profit Sharing = $182,550

SWA Plumber
$150K + 15%NEC + 2% Profit Sharing = $175,500

The Southwest Plumber earns -$7,050 less
----------------------------------------------------------

Additional things you get to look forward as a SWA Plumber:
- 7.5-10 year upgrade
- 160+ Contract Violations
- Industry Worst Pilot Disability Plan
- Termination of travel benefits after 1 year on disability
- Pay for Airport Parking
- No Crew Meals
- Pay for Uniforms
- Maternity benefits contract last updated in 1983
- Industry Worst Red Eye Pay
- First Class medical reimbursement limited
- Record pilot attrition
- Fly the 737 and fly 3-4 legs a day until you retire
- 901 days in negotiations for a new contract (As of 2/19/23)
- Frequent trip disruptions due to "Weather" aka IT failures Resulting in Reroutes and JAs
- Book and pay for your own hotel and transportation for scheduled layovers
- 2 Hour Reserve Call out. No Long call and no trip ownership.
- No early release after reserve assignments
- Our CEO "No Sho BoJo" doesn't even fly on his own airline

List goes on and on....

The past CEO ,now chairman of the board has turned the whole company against the pilots. Nothing better coming to work where everyone hates you . The only plus SWA has, is a good pilot group and the company is trying to ruin that .

This is exactly why I do every single thing EXACTLY by the book. I trust no one at this airline except for my flying mate (and verify).

I think I lost travel benefits as soon as I my sick bank dried up.

When you go on LTD you go on COBRA ($2100/mo for me and my family) and lose life insurance. If you get hit by a bus your family receives the benefit, but if it’s a long slow death they get nothing and are left with the crushing debt of hospital/burial bills and no life insurance to help cover expenses.

Everyone here (or anywhere for that matter) should have outside life insurance.
