We still communicate fuel loads with bungee cords and plastic tubes and verify it face-to-face, because it saved two minutes thirty years ago. Pax counts are electronic and all the ops agent has to do is verify with the FAs, but we use napkins. We already have the systems in place and operating to discontinue those and many other antiquated procedures, but we’re SWA.

Fueler puts a fuel slip in a bank teller tube. Gate agent pulls it up with the bungee cord and inputs fuel into the computer.

You’d think since everyone has a computer in their pocket that there’s an app for that…..but that’s neither here nor there.

I still laugh when I see them doing that. I also shake my head when I see the ops agent run down the jetway to ask for the FOB and then run up the jetway to input the numbers and then send out the numbers to run back down the jetway to make sure we got them. The program is DESIGNED, actually designed, to be run on an iPad. Why the ops agent doesn’t close the door walk down with the iPad and sit in the flight deck and push the numbers…..but that’s not the way we did in the -200…..a culture change is what is needed and that will never happen unless HQ moves to another state.

The best is SAN, where they put satellite terminals at the bottom of the jetways so the ops agent doesn't have to run back and forth. I mean it's a good idea, but just shows how lacking our tech infrastructure is that they have to resort to these tricks.
