New guy here so please forgive my ignorance. I’ve been spending some time educating myself on the RLA. What exactly are we waiting for to hold a SAV? Did the numbers from the survey indicate the support wasn’t there? At this point it seems like a necessary step and just curious about SWAPA’s mindset as to why we haven’t held the vote.

No one but SWAPA knows the answer to that question.

There is a TPA Round Up on 1/24. I plan on being there to ask them that question if it hasn't been addressed before then.

Yep. No one outside of SWAPA knows for sure.

Having said that, my three guesses are:
  • There’s still not a lot of enthusiasm for nor very much comprehension of the RLA process within SWAPA. I’m inferring from our late filing for mediation, from the absence of RLA education, and from the fact that our former president made a drive-by on the forum a few months ago proclaiming that he thinks the RLA is essentially pointless (he still holds considerable sway within our pilot group), that there’s a significant portion of the SWAPA BOD, exec’s, and committee members who still believe attempting to leverage the RLA is a waste of time. I’m sure they are also hearing from members, like ElonMusk, who help reinforce that idea in their minds.
  • They have polling data to support that a SAV right now wouldn’t turn out well.
  • Similar to my first guess above, I wouldn’t be surprised that a lot of SWAPA pilots are contacting SWAPA warning SWAPA that they better not take a SAV because, given the deep lack of RLA understanding within our pilot group, many of them probably believe that a successful SAV would mean that we’re going on strike sometime soon. That terrifies them because they think if we went on strike, we’d be out of work for a long time (BTW, the median length of a mainline airline pilot strike over the last 26 years is four days), and because, in their minds, it flies in the face of SWA’s “luv” and “coheart” culture.

I think it is strictly timing. Based on reading the tea leaves in comms that I have seen, it would appear that "trust the plan" is what the reps are being told to say. I would expect a springtime vote to have max effect over the summer travel season lead up. They don't need an overwhelming majority to vote yes, only 51 percent.

From listening to the latest podcast "825" they state their #1 goal is to provide security of a job to its members. In this same like of thinking they talk about the SAV and briefly mention not wanting to ruin the company or something to that effect and hope they won't have to have a SAV. the union as well as a lot of others are still in the mindset of "we dont want to hurrt the company"
all while the company does not care at all about us.
Meltdown on top of meltdown, 1221, dividends, stock buybacks. How much more will it take?

Flew with a guy on the SPC before the meltdown and he said our polling numbers were not good. Like low turnout and 65-70% would vote to strike.

So the plan was to do education and vote in the spring if we didn’t see results, followed by multi-front picketing so more could attend.

But that was before the meltdown so I’ve no idea if those plans are being scrapped or accelerated.

And since we allow the probationary pilots to vote, expect that number to get much lower because probies tend to drink the Kool-aid...

Absolutely none that I personally know or went through training with
Plenty will be voting with their feet before long if this keeps up. Check the last class size
