Precisely, except when race and gender DO MATTER in getting you a job because of a company’s eagerness to hire you because of your race or gender and also when that company is reluctant to fire you because of your race or gender.

See? In a perfect world race and gender wouldn’t matter especially when it comes to a highly safety sensitive job like ours. Unfortunately, that’s not reality.
