Default SWA or UAL

I hold a CJO at United, but have always been interested in SWA and hope to get an interview soon. I've only got 15 career years left, so I'm trying to maximize income without destroying my QOL. If you had the choice under my circumstances which would you choose. and why?

Do you live in a SWA or UAL domicile?

Biggest question right there. Commuting to either will not be great but doable. Go with whatever city works best for you etc...

Also since you only have a UAL offer, obviously go with that.

Totally agree. Living in a domicile will make the next 15 years a breeze. Not living in domicile will make it seem like an eternity.

With that said, you don’t really have a choice right now. Despite their desperate need, Southwest is stilling working the behind the curtain magic and decision making on pilot hiring. Getting an interview is not a guarantee of getting hired. There are still plenty of TBNT emails going out. The percentage appears to be down but it is still happening.

Take the United job. It really is not a decision until you have a Southwest offer in hand.

Appreciate the thoughts guys, but I guess what I'm getting at is IF you had the choice of the two and were a commuter to each what would you pick?

UAL hands down. Especially with only 15 years left. Omg, I can’t believe this is even a question.

Go to United to start, for sure, you can be a widebody FO within a year and a Captain on the 737 once you get 500hrs and are off probation. 756 upgrade in about 10 years if they’re still around. Unfortunately SWA upgrade times are a small eternity that spans most of the time you have left if you don’t live on the left coast.

SWA will give you more days off, but sounds like you’ll just work on them to increase your career earnings. Sounds like making money will be easier at United and you’ll have more options than 737 FO for longer.

As a commuter, Southwest is a very difficult airline to work for. I don’t work for United, but I think United would have more commutable trips. Southwest trips are built for living in domicile. The trips at Southwest either start too early (AM) or end too late (PM). Good luck whichever airline you choose.

Honestly, that depends on the commute. I live in a SWA base and it was my top choice when I set off down the 121 road. But I got an offer at UAL first and have always commuted to a UAL base. I'm actually very happy I wound up at UAL after all despite the commute, which happens to be an easy one. In my case, the international pass travel benefit at UAL has turned out to be a huge unanticipated benefit (my inlaws all live overseas). And these days, I'm dipping my toe into WB flying, which is a nice change of pace from the NB grind. Take the UAL class date while you think about what you'd do if you got a CJO at SWA.
