Default Block bidding horsepower

What seniority does it require to gobble up all the summer weeks at once in any given base? Asking for a friend.

Top 15ish percent depending on how many weeks you are bidding. I am 21 percent in Houston and I suspect I will be able to hold shoulder summer (may-early June) this year.

If the pilot base has 500 FOs and the average number of weeks of vacation is 3 weeks for all FOs in that base then there should be 352 weeks of Summer vacation.

(500 x 3) x 23.5% = 352

Reference:
  1. In computing the First Officer list for each domicile, the total number of seven (7) day blocks is computed by multiplying the number pilots eligible for only seven (7) days vacation by one (1), only fourteen (14) days by two (2), etc. The entire list is then totaled and multiplied by one and five-hundredths (1.05). This number will then yield the total number of seven (7) day blocks to be distributed throughout the year for that particular list. The Company must post for bid a minimum of six percent (6.0%) of the accrued vacation periods in each period; twenty-three and one-half percent (23.5%) during June through August; and eight and three-tenths percent (8.3%) during the month of November and the month of December.

Based on the above math you should be able to get summer should blocks of vacation once you hit the top 30 percent ish.

If you’re working on a week you have a vacation scheduled you’re doing it wrong. Every week can be a vacation week.

So explain to be how block bidding works for vacation? Do you get the whole block if you can hold just one of the weeks or only if you can hold all the weeks?

You only get what you bid. Hence , take the time to put in every combination of choices .

The company uses that formula to pack the weeks in undesirable patterns (max out late august, min weeks in mid summer) which results in a way less than desirable distribution of weeks for block bidding.

I have been better than 30 percent for 3 years now and I have never been able to hold summer. This is true for everyone I know in a similar predicament. I can hold spring break like a champ, though.

What kills me is all the senior guys on the CA side bid summers off... then pick of Premium over it. I know, people can do whatever they want with vacation etc, but its just silly when they have 40 year old kids and don't use any of the vacation time to actually do vacation and just use it to hit 250 TFP...

Guys can typically hold left seat before they can hold summer vacation. It’s a messed up system.

It's an imperfect system for sure, but I am not one to tell anyone what to do on their vacation weeks. I think if the weeks were more fairly distributed and still honoring seniority, there would be a lot less wanking about it.
I hope C2020 will fix a lot of the issues.
