I truly don’t understand why everyone gets worked up about summer vacation or vacations in generally. Just make your own time off for vacation. Simple.

Especially if the Kompany’s going to make it next to impossible to get a summer vacation unless you’re super senior, then why would you feel guilty about it?

It’s a bad system. It’s a system that causes senior people to bid highly coveted vacation weeks which they have no intention of using, and then they are able to horse trade those weeks with junior friends of theirs thus bypassing the seniority system. I cant think of a worse system if you were to start from scratch and devise one. We’ve voted to change this three times. Now it’s up to the NC to implement these changes in the TA.

They use them to reduce block liability and increase their paycheck by clearing trips they otherwise would not be able to get rid of. Almost any non first year pilot has the seniority horsepower to create a 7-10 day free period in any month with ellitt and/or a single sick call should the need arise. Just because you use your vacation weeks differently than someone else doesn’t mean your method is more correct than the next guy. Do you also get upset at the players who bid turn lines, give them away, and pick up premium?

I agree with you that we should change to a better system and I voted as such but this is a classic case of playa hatin syndrome…

My feelings exactly. The rules are terrible and we have voted to change them. In the meantime, we are all doing what works to further our best interest.

This won’t change regardless of what the rules are.

I never said I blame the pilots for playing the game. I blame the way the system is written. It’s a terrible system.

It's the same with major holidays at Delta (thankfully we can't work over vacations). Senior pilots with no desire to be home for the holidays (Xmas, New Years, Memorial, Labor day etc) will bid them off and then pick up trips as double pay green slips, whilst the junior pilots with youngins at home who really want the days off will be forced into working them at straight pay.

It's why I lobby for some sort of holiday pay as even a small override would make the holidays go senior right from the get go and everyone would get more of what they want.

Not a lot to add to this but….

As a five year FO there is no way I can hold mid summer vacation - much less two weeks in a row which is why I was so nervous when my son and I signed up for a July Philmont trip (Boy Scout backpacking) a couple of years ago.

That being said, all it to took was putting a note about Philmont in my vacation trade comments and two guys generously traded their mid July trips for my crappy late summer / fall week so I could go.

This is one of the many reasons why I am so glad I am at SWA. We have a genuinely great group of pilots.
