On a recent SJD turn out of SNA, we were provided crew meals on the ground in Cabo. The FO put the salad provided in his bag and forgot about it. He was given the full beatdown by customs in SNA for not declaring it. It was absolutely off the chart. At some point after a solid 15 minutes of being berated, he had had enough and said, "Look, either let me go or arrest me". They let him go - keeping the stupid salad of course. I think that agent had salad for dinner.

One time after an international flight into MSP, I ate an apple as we deboarded. I finished as we were walking down the jetway to customs. Of course, no garbage anywhere on the way. As I approached the customs agent, I said I finished this apple, and all I had was the stem and a little bit of core hanging in my hand. The agent called some "code" over the loud speaker and some guy came in a partly assembled hazmat suit with tongs to take the core out of my hand, place it in a bag that they could seal and I too was lambasted for not just throwng the core onto the floor along the hallway or into the jetbridge (or at least that was the way I took it). Basically after 10mins of the agent taking info for a "report" they said I could leave.

Thought I was getting a 2319 from the CDA:

You we’re lucky. A Delta guy left a apple in his bag at MSP. He was fined 1000.00, removed from global entry and placed on the customs watch list for 10 years requiring he go to secondary inspection every time.

I think you can import a certain amount from certain countries. Like 100 Cuban cigars from Amsterdam. But you should look it up.

One of our guys had a deli tray in his bag going into Australia. He didn't declare it and they found it. He was fined 2,500 AUD (about $1,900). He was not very happy with that. Just declare it. If they take it, they take it, but at least you won't be on the hook for the fine.

That changed. Trump admin went back to the old rules, essentially. No cigars. No rum. The ladies at the top of the jetway will still try to sell them to you.

But feel free to smoke ‘em when you are in Mexico. Just don’t try to bring them back.
