SWAPA Poll: Closes April 25
Don’t forget to fill out the SWAPA poll the results of which the BOD will discuss at next month’s meeting.
Some points to ponder:
I personally told them that the minimum acceptable thresholds for me voting yes on any TA were much higher than the maximum values SWAPA provided in the poll and that also I needed to see industry-leading, gold-plated disability plans, loss of license coverage, and work rules for me to vote yes.
Some points to ponder:
- Some of the critical questions with respect to pay and retirement limit your selection and attempt to anchor your expectations to a lower bar for C2020. For example, the initial pay raise that you’d like to see is limited to a maximum of 40%. You can’t write in anything higher. The app won’t allow you to (I tried). Don’t forget, a 50% pay raise doesn’t even get us up to UA’s inflation adjusted 737 CA rates circa 2000.
- It asks how much you support entering into mediation. Many people within our pilot group do not understand mediation within the context of the RLA. There is NO (as in ZERO) leverage under the RLA for labor until we have been in mediation for at least a couple of years. The leverage timer doesn’t start until we enter mediation. There is also no possibility of going on strike until we have been in mediation for at least a couple of years (there is a correlation between our leverage and the possibility we could go on strike). From the time we enter mediation, you have a minimum of two or three years to build up your strike fund before we could possibly be allowed to go on strike (and even then, it’s pretty unlikely).

That is my line in the sand this time. Loss of license and disability that includes retirement contributions.
Right now if you go on disability, there's no company money funding retirement.
There are other things I'd like to see, primarily dealing with scheduling, training scheduling, quality of life.
And at 15% NEC, we are trailing the industry in retirement right now. It needs to be improved.
I also mentioned for a "freebie", that if we go to assigned seating, no middle seats on deadheads.

My expectations increase it seems literally every week. I can I just imagine where they’re going to be in 2-3 years when the company will be forced to take us seriously because we’ll be winding the mediation clock out.
As mentioned above, the SWAPA poll didn’t provide a sufficient opportunity to express just how high my expectations are now (much less years down the road).
Get comfortable with the saying “……and I’m willing to strike”.

My requirements to get a yes vote are increasing each trip as well. I’ve already been on strike once. I hope I don’t have to again, but I won’t cave.
I hope we never go to assigned seating though. I like our current setup because it works really well for us when jumpseating. The pre-board would not be a thing, and we would be stuck with whatever leftover seats available
