Eeyore, did we settle on if you'll be commuting to OAK for the plug captain spot?

Another question, the upgrade time is literally off-probation and 500 hours of UAL time, ever stop and wonder why? It's not like those guys and gals are instantly at 60% seniority list and going to the left seat. I recently sat up front in a UAL 737 all ****ed off about getting rerouted and had a nice long chat with the crew about it. The FO was a 2018 hire. He can hold captain in SFO, LAX and EWR. When I asked him why is he still an FO? "Because our reserve sucks so bad and I don't live on the coast. You do NOT want to commute to reserve here. There is a reason why thousands of guys want nothing to do with it."

We all look at the legacies as some kind of gold standard. How much reading do we do of other forums and read about their gripes? Any of their gripes sound vaguely familiar?

New Hires to be offered Widebody FO

There are some interesting perspectives in these threads.

Also, dunno if it's true, but supposedly there are like 2 Delta (or United?) guys in the latest new-hire class. Wonder why would they leave a 2-year upgrade plan and come to this turd?

Pollyanna says... the grass will always appear greener elsewhere because it's fertilized with a different brand of bullsh*t.
A bunch of suckers at UAL. Who would want to be a junior captain, commute, and sit reserve on the west coast? Good thing that doesn’t happen at SWA, or getting rerouted.

Apparently not worth it to thousands of them.

One of the reasons why NB left seat goes so junior a UAL is because of the better pay and QOL guys get on the WB fleet.
Right seat WB line holder is a much desired position. Once guys can hold a line on the WB they tend to stay there for years, many of them retire on that seat, or jump the trash bag when it’s time.

Better pay than NB captain? Also, is Global Reserve better or worse than NB captain reserve? How many days are you on the hook as a NB captain reserve?

It leaves most of us scratching our heads that NB captain vacancies would get bypassed by thousands of pilots and go unfilled.

Yes, WB line holder trips are very productive, a WB FO line holder credits much more hours than a reserve NB Capt.
NB cap on reserve credits 73 hours and gets used on unproductive trips which usually won’t break guaranteed, 18 days a month on the hook with a fair amount of short calls and field stby. While a WB line holder FO averages 16-18 days off a month and could accrue 100+ credits a month depending on seniority.
Most junior line holder FO on the 777 at SFO is a 2018 hire, this is why thousands of them rather stay on 777/787.
Reserve FO on the WB is even better than NB cap reserve especially if you live in base.
Having wide bodies changes the dynamics in many ways, people usually choose their poison knowing they can always bid back to the right seat or try different types more freely.

Southwest doesn’t do that kind of flying because they’re not that kind of Airline. Period. If you want to do that kind of flying, then get your apps out there. Everyone is hiring after all. If you’re not going to do that, then quit *****ing on here about how bad this glorified regional sucks and let’s work with SWAPA to get an industry leading contract. That’s what I’m focused on because I can’t control the type of equipment that the company chooses to operate, and as cliche as it is and I hated the guys that used to say this, you knew what Southwest was when you chose to come here.
When I came to SWA we were the highest paid including WB rates. So that's what I expect. I have no desire for WB either, but it would help with movement here. You are kidding yourself if you think this SWApA will get industry leading anything. One of the latest classes had 12 that weren't recommended for the PC ride.
