I’ve got weekend plans most of the month and can’t afford being unable to trade out of a red day, so I bid my usual weekday line giving me 26.25 for my vacation week. Could’ve held a line that paid 42 for the vacation but would’ve had to trade every single trip, including the July 4th weekend trip (good luck with that).

I lucked out with a last minute summer week trade for the week I needed or I’d have converted mine to a floater.

My "friend" has a reserve block Mon-Wed that week, so attending the picket is simply out of the question. The only question is if picking up out of open time the day prior to the picket will result in pitchforks and bonfires, and if avoiding OT the day prior will result in getting sued. Again.

My friend would be picking up on the Sunday. The question is still valid, is OT the day prior ok for someone who is already going to be working/flying/sitting reserve on the 21st?

Why wouldn't it be?
Your friend can pick up open time how they see fit. I would think it is poor taste for anyone who picks up a trip knowing that it flies over the 21st when they bid on it. Everything else is whatever.
I could easily work over the 21st and boost my trip total or hang out with my family, but I am going to drive down to Dallas and stand around with a bunch of sweaty dudes.
