This is what I am talking about. Do your research and play the odds. Know the contract and use it. The cap is your friend at the end of the month.
With all that, bid like you want and don't let anyone else tell you how that works. If you arent going to get a trip at premium or it looks like you may, bid it premium. If there is simply no chance and that trip is commutable/has great layovers/works for you, then bid it straight.
Here's a hint: most guys who are trying to tell you how to bid are in it for themselves and don't want you bidding straight and taking away "their" premium. Not saying that's what is going on here because this thread seems a lot more educational than greedy, but watch out. Not everybody at SWA is benevolent as they seem. Anytime someone texts me about a trade or anything unsolicited, I generally look very closely at who they are and what their motives are. When I was junior and on reserve, I fielded many phone calls and texts from guys who were trying to "help". Some were genuine, others not so much.

I'd add if you're going to take an AR trip and extra fly it ask the person if they really want it. If that doesn't/can't happen send a curtsey text so the person doesnt make it to the airport to find out there's nothing to fly. Same with TTGA.
tournament level- coordinate with person on reserve and take the flight right before show so the person gets the day at home most likely.

So if FO pay is 69% of Captain pay, going to Captain pay is a 44.9% raise. If Captain pay is ~144.9% of FO pay, going to FO is a 31% pay cut.

If an FO makes $100 and a Captain makes $200, the Captain makes 100% more than the FO, and the FO makes 50% less than the Captain.

That being said, don’t be the guy who posts a reserve block for trade with “will trade for any trip” comments and when offered a trip that is an equivalent value/similar footprint turn it down.

I personally would have found it useful had someone taught me when I was a new hire. I also remember the instructors telling us to bid straight to get premium. Even captains who thought they were being helpful.
I managed to learn a few things the hard way, share what I’ve learned with those coming behind and backed it up with references in the contract. I’ve seen far too many new guys bidding straight over me bidding premium and me being over the cap and they being under the cap. They get the trip and Uncle Gary gets to save 8 TFP towards the stock buybacks. You may be OK with it, but someone else may appreciate a few extra TFP’s at second year rate, and two… this directs them to learn the contract sooner rather than later and that benefits everyone.
BTW… chances are that board blockers are either on vacation or over the cap and they want to hide that.
And WHACK, I liked 2018… I made a killing and didn’t work nearly as hard. Ignorance of our contract and work rules can be expensive for some and lucrative for others.
