So if the rumor of new hires in Oct are true then when would the 500 ExTOs have to start training to get them all done? They cant even train the June ones in June. I still say upgrades in Sept and Oct, maybe a sprinkling of recalls in Nov then everyone back Jan/Feb with a new hire class at the end of Feb.

They can recall them in Aug and Sept and then start classes in October. And the company doesn’t “have to” train them since they wouldn’t agree to making the EXTO into a side letter or even agreeing to their own FAQs. Theoretically they could hire and recall concurrently and just say “we changed our mind on the FAQ, tough luck”.

I'm guessing it's highly likely that the last of the ExTO pilots will be finishing up as we start to see a new hire class.

however if the current bypass ratio continues into the next 1000 upgrades, that puts a 2015 hire’s upgrade even earlier. There are about 900 FOs bypassing out of 7600 active pilots

Those guys were all eligible to upgrade but held out for a better domicile, to avoid reserve, or to get one more vacation bid in at their FO seniority. Then Covid hits and they find themselves stuck in the right seat for another 18 months. My bet is they find religion and the vast majority jump on the first upgrade opportunity they see.

Factoring everything in, moving from senior FO to junior captain at Southwest has always been a "small" move. The gap closes even more if you have to take a 6 month seat lock and a west coast base.

You say this like being a senior FO is some kind of hardship. COVID was a great time to be a senior FO. Hindsight favored pulling your trips, you could bid amazing LG bars, and no worries about getting displaced, clear board to add flying to, etc. I had my best block to pay ratio in 2020, and would have had my best year in overall pay if I would have been more motivated to go into work.
