I live in DEN so I've got it at 100% at my #1 choice. But I'm 500+ away so I doubt I'll be close until next year sometime.

Vacation bidding is September right? So next month's bid will be training in August for a September award.

Should go junior-ish for one more month while FOs wait until after vacation bidding to switch seats.

Does that sound right?

Yep. I imagine going into Fall/Winter it’ll go more senior.

I always recommend taking the first option, or close to it.

When the Max was grounded, plenty were stuck with NO option. Same with Covid. A two year sit if you didn't take the upgrade. You never know what's around the corner.

How about an unknown medical issue that pops up? Better to get CA pay while out than FO pay. All things to consider.

This is true, but you could also conversely be stuck doing a 2 leg east to west coast commute to reserve for those two years, which for some is definitely not worth it.

As for the CA pay vs FO pay, it's based on a 12 month look back, so most FOs near upgrade, they're probably at the cap anyway.

Yup. Personally, I think I’d much rather be stuck as a very Senior FO, consistently holding pretty much one of my top 5 monthly lines I want while maintaining POT and vacation bidding power over being stuck commuting as a very junior reserve CA to a domicile I dislike.

The needle moves all the time. Right now it's unlimited premium and being a senior FO is great. 2 years ago we were getting hindsighted and being a captain meant at least you were getting captain rates for your 90tfp.

I am going to delay upgrade in a few months when it's my turn, but that may change depending on the situation.

Valid points, however, during the hindsight era, I was consistently crediting a solid amount of credit due to those glorious green bars and a little MOT pick up to work maybe 12 days a month on the days I wanted. (Nothing amazing…125+ range). In that particular scenario I felt very fortunate to sit where I sat on the FO list.

I’m in a similar boat as you e6 and I’m not discouraging upgrading but I’ll sure miss the flexibility when I pull the trigger. Lots of things to ponder.

Totally agree. I have one homeschooled kid and a wife left at home and we travel 6-7 times a year and go on vacations of our choosing. I do that by blowing giant holes in my schedule and flying premium to pay for it all. Bought Disneyland annual passes this year and made awesome memories.

Not sure what we are doing next year, but I seem to vividly remember not being able to do these things when I was commuting to eternal weekend reserve. Upgrade will be tempting, but it can wait. I just wish someone would tell me when the next black swan event is coming so I can plan for it.

Guy I flew with today told me they’re going to go to age 68, but over 65s will only be able to fly 80% of FAR 117 block limits. So there’s another one for the rumor mill that might qualify as a black swan for some.
