Wonder if you can tell them to work around your VA? Friend of mine finished Lance UPG and had VA right after training and before UOE. Figure you tell them when you're not available and they'll put you in the earliest class that matches with your schedule.

Contract says that they can’t train you over vacation. My understanding is that training scheduling will call and ask you to move your vacation to accommodate the class. If you say no, they’ll try to get you in the next class. I spoke with someone at SWAPA SRC about it and he suggested pulling the upgrade bid if you know you’ll be on vacation so you’re not taking a spot from someone who would want to go that month. Not sure how I feel about that since there’s no guarantee you could hold it the following month.

As with most things around here, the contract isn’t explicit and if you ask three people, you’ll get three different answers.

True. I couldn’t care less how inconvenienced training sked is. They don’t really care about inconveniencing people with constant move ups and denial of training preferences.

Summer UPG will prob go junior so I’d bid it if I wanted to upgrade. I’d only do summer training if I were upgrading in my base though…not gonna hose my summer and commute.

If you have vacation, it is your choice . Training will call and offer the upgrade class , you can pass if on vacation.

If you pass on it, you still hold the award though, right? Won’t they just add you to the next class? SWAPA made it sound like that wasn’t a sure thing.

^ This is correct. 1 year Captain awards are available at United on both coasts.
Captain at United on the 737 and A320 can be held at 12 bid periods with 165 days available on the line and 500hrs of United flying.
