Any "hiring" SWA does over the next 1-2 years will be through recalling of ExTO's. Upgrade will continue to be 10+ years at an absolute minimum, unless there is a big change in operation like a new fleet type or, to a lesser extent, Red Eyes. Life certainly isnt bad in the right seat, far from it. But our next contract will need to reflect the fact that most of our current FO's will have significantly less time making Captain pay than those that came before us.

I don’t think it’ll take long to get the ExTOs back and start hiring. I also agree there are a lot of junior pilots that are still going for DAL, UAL or the big cargo companies. I’m junior but with not a lot of years left, and until the Covid break I was still keeping all my other apps open, but not anymore. If I was younger I’d be trying to get somewhere with faster upgrades and wide body pay; in the end it would be a better financial decision.
With the furlough games the company played, anyone who came here primarily for stability has rearranged their priorities.

And I think that is precisely what Casey's email today was trying to Telegraph. What did he call it prior to 2016? Was it emotional compensation? Something like that. I forget the term but it was dead on.

As my teenager would say, "Word."

It will have to be a raise on both sides. Currently an FO I believe after 5 years makes 70% of captain pay. Which I believe in the old contract comparison they sent out is the highest in the industry. The issue is SWA is more of a conservative airline in growth and planes. Also if we end up going to a 737-10 which is rumored that will carry more seats (between a city pair) with less crew. Hopefully we demand higher wages overall to fly that plane. But I wish we had more retirements and movement.
The Kompany better be doing their darnedest to raise revenue because I’ll be doing my darnedest to get a contract that protects me from said inflation.
